Is Tallow Good for Your Face? Let’s Talk About Pores.

If you’ve been curious about using tallow on your face, you may have wondered:

“Isn’t putting beef fat on my skin going to clog my pores?”

It’s one of the most common questions we hear—and it makes sense. For years, skincare has taught us to associate the word oil or fat with greasy skin, breakouts, and clogged pores.

But skincare isn’t quite that simple.

Tallow Is More Than Just “Fat”

Tallow is rendered animal fat that has been used for generations in traditional skincare preparations.

What makes it especially interesting as a moisturizer is its rich lipid composition. Skin itself relies on lipids to help maintain its barrier and reduce moisture loss.

That’s one of the reasons we came back to tallow when creating Alive & Unbroken.

Instead of beginning with a long list of synthetic-feeling ingredients simply because they’re common in modern skincare, we wanted to start with something recognizable, rich and beautifully simple:

Grass-fed & finished tallow.

So, Does Tallow Clog Pores?

There isn't a universal answer that applies to every person.

“Comedogenic” ratings you may see online aren't a guarantee of how a finished product will behave on your skin. Your skin type, the complete formulation, how much you apply, and the rest of your routine all matter.

Some people find tallow works beautifully on their face. Others—particularly people who are very acne- or clog-prone—may prefer a lighter application or a different moisturizer.

That’s why we prefer not to tell people that an ingredient “can never clog pores.”

Instead, start small.

Use a tiny amount on clean skin and see how your skin responds.

Why We Love Tallow for Skin

Where tallow really shines is as an emollient.

It creates a rich, conditioning layer that can help soften dry, rough-feeling skin and help reduce moisture loss.

And because it’s naturally rich, you don't need much.

With tallow, a little goes a long way.

Warm a small amount between your fingertips and gently press or massage it into the skin rather than applying a thick layer.

Not All Tallow Skincare Is the Same

This is important.

“Tallow skincare” isn't one single product.

Purification, sourcing, additional ingredients, formulation, texture and how the finished product is used can all differ from brand to brand.

At Alive & Unbroken, we build our skincare around grass-fed & finished tallow and intentionally selected ingredients, creating different formulas for different routines and preferences.

Our Original Whipped Tallow keeps things beautifully simple, while products such as our Raw Manuka Honey moisturizer and our signature Tush Balm take the concept in different directions.

Tallow Was the Beginning. We Took It Further.

Our philosophy isn't about chasing every new skincare trend.

It's about looking backward as much as we look forward.

What did people use before skincare became complicated?

What ingredients can we recognize?

And how can we thoughtfully formulate with those ingredients today?

That philosophy eventually led us beyond traditional tallow skincare and into the creation of Tush Balm, combining grass-fed tallow with live-culture ingredients and other carefully selected ingredients in our most distinctive formulations.

Because sometimes innovation doesn't mean abandoning the past.

Sometimes it means building upon it.

Raw. Alive. Unbroken.

Ancestral ingredients. Modern hands. Made on Long Island.
